LEGNICA FESTIVAL OF SILVER `2004   -   BIRTHDAY PARTY

Twenty five years ago the first edition of the National Silverart Review was organized in Legnica. It was also the first major presentation of the modern art of jewellery in Poland. It has been continued every year, and from country-wide it evolved into international. The form of the event received wide recognition among goldshmits from Poland, Europe, Asia and North America. This year is the 25th anniversary of "Reviews", which at the moment is part of the Legnica Silver Festival. To celebrate this anniversary the Mayor of Legnica announced 2004 the Silver Year.

From among the hundreds of artists who have participated in Legnica Reviews over the years, we have invited a group of regular participants and laureates, who have continued to impress with fresh ideas, as well as those who have appeared on the now international scene in Legnica quite recently but have already made a contribution. Very distinguished guests indeed, the artists of international fame, for geopolitical reasons hitherto known from books and catalogues rather than from direct encounters. This exhibition is the first presentation of modern jewellery in Poland that is so strong - artistically and intellectually - so international and so... big. We feel hounoured that so many artists have accepted our invitation to participate in our BIRTHDAY PARTY. I would like to express our gratitude to the participating artists and especially to Giedymin Jablonski, the laureate of the Legnica competition and regular participant but first of all a man whose extensive contacts with jewellery artists all over the world have proven instrumental in the organization of the present event. It is thanks to his personal involvement that the Polish public has the opportunity to see for the first time works by so many distinguished jewellery artists from Europe, USA, Japan, and even Australia.

The BIRTHDAY PARTY is a celebration and not a solemn museum retrospective. It is also very up-to-date because we have asked the artists to send their newest and yet unpublished works. For the first time in Poland and maybe in Europe so many famous artist exhibit their work in one place on one time. In history of Polish jewellery exhibitions, it is the the most expresive and the most international. The exhibition is also a symbolic encounter as it commences at the time when the last barriers between Poland and the rest of Europe are finally gone. The exhibition is opening a new period in Gallery activity. It might also be an inspiration for modern Polish silverart. Perhaps, our dreams and plans to build the INTERNATIONAL SILVERART COLLECTION in Legnica will materialize sooner than I have thought.
